Greece inflation slows to 3.4% as price reduction initiative expands
Greece's annual inflation rate slowed to 3.4% in July, down from 4.4% in June, according to ELSTAT. While food price increases were relatively contained, significant price hikes were recorded in several sectors, most notably in heating oil (+53.2%), diesel (+22.1%), natural gas (+16.7%), and beef (+14.3%). Conversely, olive oil saw a significant price drop of 21.7%, and fruit prices decreased by 9.4%.
In response to high living costs, a national initiative to lower supermarket prices is expanding. Currently, the program includes 686 branded products from 55 companies, along with school supplies and private label goods. An average discount of 6% to 7% is expected on approximately 1,000 to 1,100 essential products. The initiative, which involves voluntary participation from retailers and manufacturers, is slated for further implementation starting August 31.
Consumer behavior in Greece is shifting as households manage economic pressure; research indicates 63% of Greeks plan to reduce food spending by choosing more economical options and private labels. While inflation has slowed, pressures remain in housing, energy, and services.
