Greek academic and educational unions raise concerns over funding and staffing

The Federation of University Teaching and Research Staff (POSDEP) has called on the Greek Ministries of Education and Economy to include faculty members from regional universities in rent reimbursement measures. The federation argues that the current exclusion creates unequal treatment, as regional staff often face high housing costs when working away from their permanent residences. POSDEP warns that this issue, combined with long-term wage stagnation, hinders the ability to attract and retain academic and research personnel.

Separately, the Panhellenic Federation of Employees of the Ministry of Education (POE-YPAITHA) has warned of potential paralysis in educational services by 2027. The union is requesting a one-year extension, until January 1, 2028, for the transfer of financial responsibilities regarding operational and building expenses to Regional Education Directorates. They also seek more time for the implementation of the Electronic Movement of Expense Documents (HDDD). The federation cautions that understaffing and insufficient organizational preparation could lead to an inability to cover basic operational needs or process payments.
