Greek agricultural markets see olive oil price drops and poultry industry shifts

The Greek olive oil market is seeing a decline in prices, with extra virgin olive oil dropping 5.2% over the last month to an average of 3.65 euros per kilogram. This follows a sharper 8.8% decrease in Spain, the world's largest producer. In Greece, prices vary by region, with Chania reaching 3.70 euros per kilogram compared to 3.60 euros in Messinia. Italy has also seen significant volatility, with average prices falling 27.3% monthly, driven by extreme price differences between Sicily and Bari.

In the Greek poultry sector, the acquisition of Nitsiakos by Perutnina Ptuj—a member of the Ukrainian-owned MHP group—has shifted the competitive landscape of a 1.5 billion euro market. While the entry of a major international player with significant capital has prompted discussions regarding potential mergers among Greek cooperatives like Pindos and the Arta Agricultural Poultry Cooperative, no immediate consolidations are currently planned. Local producers acknowledge the increased pressure from large-scale international competitors.
