Greek agricultural producers face yield optimism and price volatility

Agricultural producers in Greece are preparing for upcoming harvests, facing a mix of high yield expectations and market price concerns. In Larissa, winter onion producers anticipate good yields due to favorable weather conditions. While summer onion harvests yielded approximately 5 tons per stremma with producer prices between 20 and 30 cents per kilogram, there is ongoing concern regarding low market prices and the need for better distribution infrastructure.

In Crete, the olive oil season is approaching with expectations of a better harvest than last year, aided by significant rainfall in March and April. However, experts note that full tree rejuvenation from previous droughts may take longer. Initial price estimates for extra virgin olive oil are around 3.80 to 4.20 euros per kilogram, a significant decrease from the historic highs of 2023. Producers face pressure from strong competition from third-country imports into the European Union and strict standardization rules imposed by international companies.
