Greek agriculture: Strawberry expansion and cotton market volatility

Agricultural sectors in Greece are preparing for new seasons with varying outlooks. In the Peloponnese regions of Ilia and Achaia, strawberry cultivation is expanding, with an estimated 500 additional stremmata (50 hectares) being planted. Arvanitakis Fruits is contributing to this growth by adding 150 stremmata of new strawberry fields. Planting schedules involve tray plants starting September 20 and bare-root plants beginning in early October.

In Thessaly, cotton producers are preparing for harvest following an ideal growing season with minimal pest damage. While crop quality and yields are expected to be high due to favorable weather and low insect activity, the market remains volatile. Recent fluctuations in international cotton futures saw prices drop from a weekly high of 93.45 cents per pound to 86.43 cents per pound, creating uncertainty for domestic ginners and producers just before the harvest begins.
