Greek art and media bolstered morale during 1940 Greco-Italian War

During the Greco-Italian War of 1940-41, Greek artists and media played a critical role in sustaining national morale and mobilizing the public. Artistic works, including cartoons, posters, and illustrated postcards, were used to rally support for the armed forces and strengthen national resolve.

Historian Kostas Mamalakis noted that artists utilized Greece’s historical imagery to shape popular consciousness. As the conflict progressed, particularly when Greek forces pushed Italian troops into Albanian territory, cartoons often ridiculed the enemy and depicted military successes to encourage public confidence.

Contemporary media, such as The Greek Herald, documented the escalating tensions and the eventual declaration of war. The newspaper reported on Greek military preparations at the borders and the broader Axis expansion in the Balkans, providing vital updates to the Greek diaspora regarding the invasion and the nation's resistance.
