Greek athletics mourns death of ex‑SEGAS president George Marcellos

George Marcellos, a former champion in the 110‑metre hurdles, decathlon and high jump, died on 4 August 2026 at the age of 90. He won multiple national, Balkan and Mediterranean titles and represented Greece at the 1960 and 1964 Olympic Games, serving as the nation’s flag‑bearer at the 1964 opening ceremony.

Marcellos was president of the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) from 1975 to 1982 and later took part in local politics. He studied at the Athens University of Economics and was survived by two children. SEGAS president Sophia Sakorafa and the federation’s board issued condolences to his family and the Greek athletics community.
