Greek authorities seize 20 tons of unsafe canned tuna from Turkey

Veterinary services in the Attica Region have seized and ordered the destruction of approximately 20 tons of canned tuna originating from Turkey. The shipment, consisting of 1,903 cartons of tuna in sunflower oil, was deemed ‘unsafe’ and unfit for human consumption due to extremely high histamine concentrations.

The seizure occurred at the Piraeus Border Control Station following routine sampling and laboratory testing by the Piraeus Chemical Service of the General Chemical State Laboratory. Testing revealed that in five out of nine samples, histamine levels exceeded the maximum permissible limit of 200 mg/kg, with an average concentration of 574.1 mg/kg—significantly higher than the 100 mg/kg threshold.

Authorities confirmed that the shipment was intercepted through official inspection mechanisms before it could reach the market, preventing consumer exposure to the contaminated product.
