Larissa bakers warn of up to 10% bread price increases

Bakers in Larissa, Greece, are warning of imminent bread price increases of up to 10% due to rising energy and raw material costs. Alexandros Goulios, president of the Larissa Bakers' Guild, stated that monthly operating expenses for businesses in the sector have increased by approximately 3,500 euros.

Industry representatives have requested government intervention, including electricity subsidies and VAT reductions through the Hellenic Confederation of Professionals, Craftsmen & Merchants (GSVEE), but these requests have not been met. The sector faces significant challenges, with 20 bakeries having closed in Larissa recently and approximately 1,500 bakeries closed across Greece in recent years.

In Larissa alone, the bakery industry employs 2,420 people, a figure that rises to 3,500 when including suppliers. Bakers expressed concern that without state support, small local bakeries may face extinction, potentially driving consumers toward large supermarkets.
