Greek Banking Association pledges debt relief and €50,000 aid to families of fire victims
The Greek Banking Association announced that four systemic banks – Alpha Bank, Eurobank, National Bank of Greece and Piraeus Bank – will provide support to families of Greek fire‑fighter and helicopter‑crew victims in Gytheio, Rethymno and Psatha. The banks will cancel individual loan obligations (mortgages, consumer loans, credit‑card debt) for parents, protected children and spouses of the victims and will pay an immediate €50,000 to each of the five families.
In addition, the banks will suspend repayment of all loan obligations for six months for private individuals and businesses affected by the recent wildfires, and will also freeze enforcement actions for the same period. The measures apply to borrowers located in fire‑affected zones to be defined by the government. Affected families are instructed to contact the association through its acting General Director Charoula Apalagaki.
