Greek banks emerge as potential acquisition targets amid sector growth
The Greek banking sector is experiencing a shift in strategic focus, with discussions emerging regarding potential acquisitions and mergers. Following a period of recovery characterized by strong balance sheets and profitability, banks like Eurobank and Piraeus Bank are being identified as potential targets or acquirers. The sector currently holds a total market capitalization of 54 billion euros and annual profits of 4.6 billion euros.
Among the major players, Eurobank leads in equity with 9.26 billion euros, followed by National Bank of Greece, Alpha Bank, and Piraeus Bank. While National Bank of Greece is considered unlikely to be an acquisition target due to state minority ownership and a focus on international expansion, the overall capital strength of the sector makes it an attractive investment landscape.
Separately, a report from Morningstar DBRS highlights that Greek banks possess the highest duration in sovereign bond portfolios among major European banking systems. Approximately 71% of these portfolios consist of government bonds with maturities exceeding five years. This high concentration suggests that Greek banks may face increased sensitivity to interest rate fluctuations if bond yields continue to rise.
