Greek banks commit €560 million to school and university upgrades

Four major Greek banks—Alpha Bank, Eurobank, National Bank of Greece, and Piraeus Bank—have committed a total of €560 million to upgrade educational infrastructure through the ‘Marietta Giannakou’ program. This initiative covers all levels of education, from kindergartens to universities.

Over the past two years, the program has renovated 670 schools across Greece, benefiting more than 150,000 students and teachers. The first phase involved 430 schools, while the second phase focused on 240 units. Renovations included interior and exterior painting, hygiene facilities, accessibility ramps for people with disabilities, playground improvements, and roof insulation.

The expanded €560 million fund includes an additional €160 million specifically designated for the radical upgrading of facilities at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and the National Technical University of Athens. The works are being implemented by Building Infrastructure S.A. (KTYP A.E.).
