Greek banks see €5.3 bn surge in private‑sector deposits
Deposits by the private sector in Greek banks rose by €5.3 billion in the latest month, an annual growth rate of 7.8%. Almost all of the increase – €4.973 bn – came from businesses, with €4.582 bn from non‑financial enterprises, indicating that the new funds are driven by corporate activity rather than household wages.
Despite the deposit growth, household inflation pressures remain high, squeezing disposable income on food and housing. Greece continues to record the lowest household savings rate in the EU, and private‑sector debt stays elevated, with long‑term liabilities to the tax authority and social security exceeding €110 bn and €50 bn respectively.
