Greek basketball squad faces roster uncertainty before 2027 World Cup qualifiers

Greece’s men’s national basketball team is grappling with a roster dilemma ahead of the August FIBA qualification windows for the 2027 World Cup. While powerhouses Spain and France are fielding their full star line‑ups, Greece remains uncertain about the availability of Giannis Antetokounmpo and several players currently in U.S. colleges.

The team’s recent defeats to Romania and Portugal have left the group standing at 3‑3, prompting coach Vasilis Spanoulis to stress collective responsibility. He told reporters, "Everyone must take responsibility; I cannot bear the burden alone. When key players are missing the team suffers a steep decline."

The coach’s remarks come as the federation seeks to secure a competitive roster for the upcoming qualifiers, hoping to avoid further setbacks in the quest for a World Cup berth.
