Greek beef prices surge up to 50% in three years, straining families

Beef prices in Greece have risen sharply over the past three years, with some cuts increasing by as much as 50%. Ground beef that cost €13‑14 per kilo in 2023 now sells for €15‑17, while beef spare ribs have jumped from €11‑13 to €16‑17 per kilo. "A kilo now costs about €20; for a large family it’s simply unaffordable," said a local butcher.

The higher costs are pressuring household budgets, especially larger families and students. One mother cooking for nine people explained she must constantly seek discounts to keep meat on the table. A student added that many now need two jobs just to cover basic expenses. As a result, many consumers are cutting back on beef purchases and turning to cheaper alternatives.

These price hikes reflect broader inflation in basic food items since 2023, affecting the cost of living for many Greeks.
