Greek Cancer Federation condemns exploitation of child illness fundraisers

The Hellenic Cancer Federation (ELLOK) has expressed strong condemnation regarding reports involving the organization “Paidiki Chara” and the management of funds raised for children with serious illnesses, including cancer. The federation stated that the exploitation of human suffering for personal financial gain is an unacceptable form of deception.

ELLOK noted that such practices damage societal trust and undermine the work of legitimate volunteers and organizations. The federation clarified that in Greece, children with cancer have universal access to organized public health services, including procedures for necessary treatment abroad when medical indications and specific conditions are met.

While the federation acknowledged that families facing serious illnesses often encounter significant financial hardships, such as loss of income or housing and transport costs, it emphasized that the costs of medical treatment should be clearly distinguished from these living expenses. The organization called for greater transparency and substantive oversight regarding public fundraising efforts.
