Greek-Chinese archaeological research concludes first phase at Angelokastro
The first phase of a systematic archaeological investigation at Angelokastro, Aetolia-Acarnania, concluded in July 2026. The project is a collaborative effort between the Greek Ministry of Culture, the Chinese School of Classical Studies in Athens, and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Aetolia-Acarnania and Lefkada.
Part of a five-year plan spanning 2026 to 2030, the research aims to examine the ancient settlement of Arsinoe, analyzing its urban planning and architectural remains. The program is directed by Dr. Olympia Vikatou, General Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, and Dr. Li Xinwei, Director of the Chinese School of Classical Studies.
Excavations focused on the Kakavaria site, uncovering a significant square building featuring a peristyle courtyard and evidence of successive periods of use. Findings include roof ceramics, terracotta ornaments, various vessels, copper coins, and animal remains. These artifacts have been moved for conservation and scientific study to assist in dating and identification.
