Greek citizens file complaint over Macedonian songs in Meliti

A group of Greek citizens has submitted video footage to the Prosecutor's Office in Florina following a celebration in Meliti (Ovcharani). The video features songs in the Macedonian language with lyrics dedicated to Philip II and Alexander the Great.

Complainants argue the content is a provocation and a part of a modern “Macedonian-Slavic” narrative that challenges the Greek interpretation of ancient Macedonian history. The lyrics reportedly depict Philip II as a Macedonian king leading troops against Athens and present Alexander the Great as Macedonian rather than Greek. The complainants are seeking to determine if there is criminal responsibility for the individuals appearing in the video.

The incident has reignited debates regarding the status of the Macedonian national minority in Greece and the realization of rights related to national identity, language, and education. While critics argue such activities are often viewed through the lens of irredentism rather than basic human rights, no specific measures have been announced by the Florina Prosecutor's Office following the submission.
