Greek Coast Guard launches large rescue operation north of Samos

Greek authorities have activated a major search and rescue operation in the sea area north of the island of Samos. The effort is coordinated by the Unified Coordination Center for Search and Rescue (EKSED) and involves Coast Guard patrol vessels, a large open‑sea ship, a rescue craft from the Greek Rescue Team, a land patrol vehicle and an Hellenic Air Force helicopter.

The operation follows a recent incident in which a Turkish boat rescued a number of foreign nationals after direct coordination with Greek officials. Adverse weather, with north‑northwest winds reaching Beaufort force 4, is hampering the search, but crews continue to sweep the area for any missing persons.

All assets remain on scene as the coordinated effort proceeds under full command of the Greek Coast Guard and the national rescue centre.
