Greek Coast Guard rescues 54 migrants after sailboat grounds off Kos

On the night of 1 July, a sailing vessel carrying foreign migrants was found grounded in shallow water inside the Limniona harbour on the Greek island of Kos. The boat had been reported in a precarious position in the sea west‑south‑west of the island.

Greek coast guard units from Kos, Kalymnos and Leros, together with police, dispatched two patrol boats. Crews boarded the sailboat, detached it and escorted it to the port of Mastichari, where the vessel was seized. The Coast Guard of Kos is conducting a pre‑investigation into the incident.

During land searches by coast guard and police personnel, a total of 54 migrants were located in the surrounding area. All were reported to be in good health and were transferred to the Center for Reception and Identification (KYT) on Kos for processing.
