Greek coastal fishermen announce nationwide protests
Coastal fishermen across Greece have organized nationwide protests scheduled for Sunday, October 11, at 10:00 AM. The mobilization, coordinated by the Panhellenic Network of Coastal Fishing Associations, aims to protest rising fuel costs and controversial provisions within a new fishing bill currently under consideration by the Greek Parliament.
Key grievances include the insufficient compensation for increased fuel prices, which fishermen claim limits their ability to work and threatens family incomes. Additionally, the industry is protesting new digital obligations proposed in the legislation, such as satellite tracking systems for coastal vessels, digital invoicing, and electronic dispatch notes. Fishermen argue these regulations do not account for existing infrastructure or the specific working methods of small-scale coastal operators and express concern over the penalties associated with non-compliance.
In regions such as Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, and Pieria, participants plan to approach the Thermaic Gulf by sea, while others will join via land. Local associations, including those in Alonissos and Kyma, have confirmed their participation in the movement.
