Greek Court of Audit to rule on Pensioners' Solidarity Contribution
The Greek Court of Audit is scheduled to rule on October 7, 2026, regarding the method used to calculate the Pensioners' Solidarity Contribution (EAS). This austerity-era measure affects approximately 440,000 pensioners whose primary pensions exceed €1,468 per month.
The central legal dispute concerns whether the contribution should be applied to the entire pension amount once the threshold is crossed, or if it should be calculated proportionally only on the portion exceeding the limit. Retirees argue for a proportional calculation, which could potentially reduce their individual contributions by up to 50%.
The EAS serves as a major revenue source for the Generational Solidarity Insurance Fund (AKAGE), a reserve intended to address future challenges posed by an aging population. By the end of 2026, AKAGE's reserves are estimated to exceed €23 billion. While there have been reports of government recommendations favoring a proportional calculation, the issue has not yet been formally addressed in recent legislative packages.
