Greek court sentences horse owner to 15 months for neglect
The Thessaloniki Court of Appeals has upheld a conviction against the owner of a horse named ‘Sofia’ for animal neglect. The owner was sentenced to 15 months of suspended imprisonment, a fine of 2,500 euros, and 1,500 euros in legal costs.
The case dates back to the summer of 2020 in Veria, when the horse was found in a critical state, unable to stand and suffering from severe hoof damage. While the owner claimed the animal had congenital issues, veterinary assessments concluded that the horse had been left without necessary care and medical attention for an extended period.
Despite rescue efforts by volunteers and animal welfare organizations, including a surgical intervention at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the horse ultimately passed away.
