Greek Cultural Heritage Law Draft Sparks Nationwide Protests

A draft law proposed by Greece's Ministry of Culture would create an Anonymous Company under the Organisation for the Management and Development of Cultural Resources (ODAP) and a new public‑law entity to take over ticket revenue, pricing, and commercial activities at archaeological sites, including the Eptapyrgio monument.

Unions, former resistance prisoners, archaeologists and SYRIZA MP Giannis Amanatidis have demonstrated against the bill, calling for its immediate withdrawal and warning that the proposal would commercialise public heritage. Protestors gathered in Thessaloniki outside the Genti Koulé building, demanding the removal of Eptapyrgio from a list of 21 designated monuments and emphasizing the need to keep cultural assets under public, not private, control. The Executive Committee of the A.D.E.D.Y supports the workers' strike and the broader opposition to the legislation.
