Greek Cyber Security Center warns of sophisticated digital fraud

The Greek Cyber Security Center has issued a warning regarding the increasing sophistication of digital fraud targeting citizens, businesses, and public organizations. Modern cyberattacks are becoming more organized and targeted, moving away from easily identifiable phishing attempts characterized by spelling errors or poor formatting.

Fraudsters are now utilizing highly accurate clones of banking and institutional websites, spoofed sender addresses, and advanced social engineering techniques. Common methods include phishing via email, smishing through SMS, and vishing via telephone calls where attackers impersonate bank employees, accountants, or public officials. Other prevalent tactics include fraudulent online classified ads and Business Email Compromise (BEC), where communications are intercepted or forged to authorize urgent payments or change banking details.

The rise of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has further escalated the threat by enabling the mass production of well-written, personalized messages and the convincing imitation of voices and images. These tools increase the speed, scale, and persuasiveness of scams. The primary objective of these attacks is often to manipulate the human element through trust, fear, or urgency, tricking users into revealing passwords, card details, or approving unauthorized transactions.
