Greek Defence Ministry to consolidate military camps, creating multi‑unit bases

The Greek Ministry of National Defence announced a major restructuring of the armed forces’ camp network. The plan calls for the closure and merger of many existing camps, reducing the current total of 807 installations. New "poly‑camps" will house multiple units and specialties, cutting guard requirements and saving resources.

Facilities are being repurposed: the former centre in Tripoli will become a training hub for drones and UAVs, while the abandoned site at Malakasa will host a new drone‑manufacturing plant. The reform is driven by Greece’s sharp demographic decline, which has lowered conscript numbers from over 110,000 in the 1980s to around 50,000 today, and by the need for economic efficiency.

Overall, the initiative aims to create flexible, modern, fully‑manned units in key regions, improving readiness while reducing the financial burden of maintaining an oversized infrastructure.
