Greek Deputy Transport Minister Kottsiras Announces Major Public Transport and Rail Upgrades

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport George Kottsiras presented the government's plan to provide reliable, quality mobility for all citizens. He highlighted measures to strengthen public transport, ease traffic congestion in the Attica region, rebuild the Greek railway network, and improve transport safety.

Key actions include the Triple Junction Skaramagas project, which after decades of delay has entered the implementation phase following contract signing and is expected to alleviate congestion together with works at the Metamorfosi Junction. Public transport is being expanded with 1,076 new buses in Attica, of which 125 are electric, targeting a fleet of 1,700 by 2028; Thessaloniki will receive 50 new electric articulated buses.

On the rail side, restoration work after the storms Daniel and Elias is progressing rapidly, with the main line slated for completion by the end of summer. Signalling and tele‑control already operate on the Athens‑Thessaloniki corridor, with full ETCS installation planned. The railway.gov.gr portal now offers real‑time train tracking. A new train arrived this month, the first in decades, with a second due soon and the remaining 23 units expected by the end of 2027 under an agreement with the FS Group, completing a comprehensive rail modernisation.
