Greek economic resilience and Afghanistan's humanitarian crisis
The Greek economy shows resilience despite geopolitical uncertainty stemming from the Middle East. According to Eurobank, indicators such as retail trade recovery, controlled employment slowdown, and inflation deceleration support continued economic growth projections for the second quarter of 2026. Retail sales volumes increased by 3.4% in May, and annual employment growth accelerated to 1.2% in June.
In Afghanistan, five years after the Taliban takeover, a severe humanitarian crisis persists. The United Nations World Food Programme reports record malnutrition levels affecting 47% of children and youth. The situation is compounded by famine, drought, and floods, alongside a decrease in international aid. Additionally, approximately 5.9 million Afghans have repatriated from Pakistan and Iran since September 2023, many living in extreme poverty.
Socially, women in Afghanistan face systemic exclusion. They are barred from higher education and most sectors of the labor market, and are subject to strict movement restrictions and dress codes enforced by morality police.
