Greek Education Minister Sofia Zaharakis Sets Timeline for Teacher Appointments and University Entrance Exam Results

Education Minister Sofia Zaharakis announced that the publishing of the university entrance exam base results for the 2026 Panhellenic exams will occur before the end of July, possibly by July 28, allowing families to arrange student housing earlier.

She also detailed the staffing schedule for the new school year: 5,500 permanent teacher appointments are to be completed by 20 August, and the recruitment of substitute teachers will be finished by the end of August or the first days of September so they can be placed before schools reopen. Zaharakis noted that since 2019 more than 50,000 permanent teaching positions have been filled, but applications for substitute roles have fallen by about 20,000, reflecting reduced interest amid economic and professional pressures. A national digital consultation on the new Lyceum and national diploma system will start within the next 15 days.
