Greek Education Ministry launches national strategy for Greek language

On 22 July 2026, Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki met the newly appointed board of the Center of Greek Language (Κέντρο Ελληνικής Γλώσσας) in Athens, with a simultaneous online link to Thessaloniki. The board, comprised of scholars such as Antónis Regkákos and other university professors, was tasked with drafting a unified national strategy for teaching Greek abroad.

The strategy aims to strengthen Greek schools worldwide, upgrade the Greek language certification (Πιστοποίηση Ελληνομάθειας), broaden the network of examination centres, and develop modern digital tools and teaching materials. In 2026 the certification exams attracted 14,500 candidates, signalling growing interest among the diaspora and non‑Greek speakers. New Greek language sections were approved in Prague (98 students) and Toulon, France (57 students), expanding support for Greek communities abroad. The Center will coordinate the plan with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidency of the Government.

Overall, the initiative seeks to connect younger generations of the Greek diaspora with their language and culture through enhanced education resources and certification standards.
