Greek Education Ministry meets theologians on teacher appointments

On 20 July 2026 the Greek Ministry of Education hosted a meeting between the General Secretary of Primary, Secondary and Special Education, Ioannis Papadomaraki, and representatives of the so‑called “Group of Undetermined Theologians”. The delegation, including Sofia Mylona, Katerina Pritsiola, Georgia Spirou, Maria Kouroucli and Ilias Zarmbouris, outlined urgent needs for permanent teacher appointments and the hiring of substitute staff for the 2026‑2027 school year.

The group stressed the necessity of promptly filling real vacancies with transparent, merit‑based processes, avoiding the assignment of Religious Education to teachers without the appropriate specialization. It also called for proper recording of organic and functional gaps in the theology department, recognition of theology degrees for broader public‑sector positions, and the exclusive teaching of Ethics by qualified theology teachers. The General Secretary recorded the proposals, signalling continued dialogue to improve staffing and standards in Greek public education.
