Greece nationwide protests by students, teachers, and public workers

Massive nationwide protests and strikes are occurring across Greece, involving students, teachers, university staff, healthcare workers, and public sector employees. Demonstrations have been reported in approximately 50 cities, including major hubs like Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Larissa, and Crete.

In Athens, an estimated 10,000 people participated in a central march from the Propylaea toward Syntagma Square. The mobilizations include a 24-hour strike by the Teachers' Federation (DOE) and work stoppages by secondary school teachers (OLME). Public sector workers, under the call of the ADEDY confederation, have also initiated a three-hour work stoppage.

Key demands from the protesters include increased funding for public education, higher salaries for educators, the restoration of the 13th and 14th month salaries, and the filling of critical staffing shortages. Students are specifically protesting the rising cost of living, high rents, and the lack of affordable student housing, with some groups setting up tents in public squares to highlight the housing crisis.

In Thessaloniki, the protests led to the temporary closure of five metro stations. The Greek government has emphasized its priority to prevent violence and property damage while maintaining the right to peaceful protest.
