Greece housing crisis impacts students and educators

Greece is facing a significant housing crisis affecting both students and educators. As the new academic year approaches, students are struggling to find small apartments (30-50 sq. m.) in urban centers and university towns. Rent for these units typically ranges from 350 to 400 euros at the lower end, while higher-end options can reach between 500 and 700 euros. The Panhellenic Federation of Urban Real Estate Agents (POSMAS) notes that while prices have stabilized, supply remains extremely limited, particularly for well-maintained properties on higher floors.

Simultaneously, newly appointed and substitute teachers are facing severe difficulties securing affordable housing, especially in islands and tourist regions. Many struggle to match rental costs with their salaries. In response, some local authorities have stepped in to provide support; for instance, the Municipality of Kythnos has implemented a monthly housing allowance of 300 euros for substitute teachers working on the island to help mitigate these costs.
