Greek educators raise alarms over school building safety
Teachers' associations in Greece are expressing urgent concern regarding the structural safety of school buildings following recent incidents of falling plaster and ceiling debris.
In Serres, the ‘Emmanouil Papas’ Primary Education Teachers' Association reported that a section of plaster detached from the ceiling at the entrance of the complex housing the 10th and 24th Primary Schools on October 22, 2026. While no injuries occurred, the association warned that such events highlight a dangerous lack of maintenance and oversight by the Ministry of Education.
In Porto Rafti, the ‘Aristotelis’ Teachers' Association is protesting disciplinary actions taken against 22 educators. These proceedings follow an incident in November 2025 where a large piece of ceiling plaster fell in a classroom. The association argues that authorities are attempting to shift responsibility onto teachers rather than addressing the maintenance failures of the municipal buildings.
