DEHDE completes Greece's largest substation capacity upgrade

The Hellenic Electricity Distribution Operator (DEHDE) has finished the biggest ever substation capacity‑increase programme in Greece. Fourteen high‑to‑medium voltage substations were upgraded, adding a total of 725 MVA of new power to the distribution network. The investment, funded by the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund, creates additional electric space for new renewable‑energy plants and for energy‑storage units, boosting the grid’s reliability, flexibility and the country’s energy‑transition goals.

The upgrades were carried out by installing new power transformers or replacing existing ones with higher‑capacity units and by extending the medium‑voltage side of the stations to accommodate additional lines. The programme, launched in July 2022, was completed in under four years despite a demanding timetable.

Substations now in operation include Ioannina I, Florina, Meliti, Filippon, Eordaia (50 MVA), Megara (75 MVA), Domokos, Pyrgos, and Oriolouthos, each receiving a 50 MVA boost. Works at Arachthos, Skidra, Sperchiada, Trikala and Magic‑Xanthi are finished and expected to be energised within the year. DEHDE’s chief executive, Tasos Manos, said the project “creates the essential electric space for more renewable energy investments and storage, strengthens reliability and flexibility, and accelerates Greece’s energy transition.”
