Greek Embassy protests 'Greater Macedonia' banner in Skopje

The Greek Embassy in Skopje has filed a formal diplomatic protest with the North Macedonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs following an incident during a FIBA Europe Cup qualifying basketball game on October 6. During the match between MZT Skopje and Iraklis, fans of the home team displayed a large banner featuring a map of a 'Greater Macedonia.'

The banner depicted territories belonging to Greece (including Chalkidiki), Serbia, Albania, and Bulgaria as part of North Macedonia. It also featured the Vergina Sun and the slogan: 'We will defend your sacred name throughout the world.' The Greek Embassy stated that the content and symbolism of the banner contravene the obligations and the spirit of the Prespa Agreement.

Furthermore, the Embassy noted reports that the banner was displayed in the presence of the North Macedonian Minister of Sports. In response to the incident, the Greek basketball club Iraklis filed an official complaint with the game commissioner, condemning the use of sports venues for political propaganda and territorial claims.
