Greek eye doctor highlights computer‑induced visual fatigue and prevention

Prolonged use of computers and other screens is identified as a major cause of digital eye strain in the workplace and at home. Ophthalmologist Giannis Datseris, MD, PhD, FEBO, vice‑president of the Hellenic College of Ophthalmology, notes that “the placement of computers in workspaces is often done haphazardly, ignoring factors such as environment, screen type, operator position, and medical history.”

Typical symptoms range from mild discomfort to severe headache, tearing, eye pain, redness, blurred vision, photophobia, nausea and a sensation of heaviness in the eyes. Risk factors include poor ergonomics, inadequate lighting, improper screen distance and angle, dry air, poor ventilation, noise, and uncorrected refractive errors—especially hyperopia and astigmatism.

Preventive measures recommended are correct screen positioning, appropriate lighting, regular breaks, and eye examinations to correct vision problems. Employers and employees are urged to consider these parameters when setting up workstations to reduce the prevalence of digital visual fatigue.
