Cyprus National Guard conducts IRIS-2026 military exercise

The Cyprus National Guard conducted the IRIS-2026 military exercise, a multi-branch operation designed to test operational readiness, coordination, and defensive capabilities. The exercise included scenarios involving the interception of enemy attacks, organized counter-attacks, and the reclamation of territory. Participating units included armored and mechanized infantry brigades, as well as special forces.

A key component of the exercise involved the participation of Greek Air Force F-16 Viper fighter jets, which were stationed at the Andreas Papandreou Air Base in Paphos. These aircraft conducted test flights and maneuvers over the Kalo Chorio firing range in Larnaca to support ground and air coordination.

During the final phase, Cyprus Minister of Defense Vassilis Palmas emphasized the importance of maintaining high deterrent power amidst regional geopolitical fluidity. He noted that the exercise serves to evaluate discipline and effectiveness while utilizing the European SAFE program to modernize defense equipment and support the domestic defense industry.
