Greece feta cheese prices projected to reach 17 euros per kg

The Greek feta cheese market is facing significant price surges, with retail costs projected to reach between 16 and 17 euros per kilogram. This upward trend is driven by a sharp decrease in sheep milk production, caused by livestock diseases that have decimated herds, alongside rising costs for energy and animal feed.

While domestic consumption in Greece is declining due to high prices, international demand remains exceptionally strong. Approximately 70% of Greek feta production is exported, primarily to Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Italy. This export focus creates a supply squeeze in the local market, as producers prioritize international contracts.

In the broader dairy sector, Greek companies are seeing significant export growth. For instance, Kri-Kri has reported strong performance in yogurt sales, particularly in the UK and Italy, and is planning capital investments through 2030. FAGE International is also expanding its presence in markets like the UK. To address the livestock crisis, the Ministry of Rural Development and Food has announced plans to restructure Greek livestock farming, focusing on biosecurity and supporting affected producers.
