Greek Fire Service fleet reveals over half of vehicles are older than 15 years

Data submitted to the Greek Parliament reveals that more than half of the Greek Fire Service's vehicle fleet is over 15 years old. Out of a total of 4,407 vehicles, including water tankers, auxiliary, and special vehicles, 2,848 are aged more than 15 years.

Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tournas provided these details following a parliamentary inquiry by independent MP Popi Tsapanidou regarding vehicle age and personnel safety. To address the aging fleet, the national civil protection program ‘AEGIS’ is underway. So far, 750 vehicles have been received out of a planned 1,400. The program expects to deliver an additional 250 vehicles by 2027 and 256 by 2028.

The Minister noted that the operational suitability of the current fleet is verified annually through regular inspections and maintenance. Over the last five years, 301 vehicles have been retired as part of the ongoing renewal process.
