Greek Firefighters Union Demands Staffing Measures Amid License Suspension
The Panhellenic Association of Forest Firefighters (ΠΑ. Σ. ΠΥ. Δ. Ε.) has launched a strong protest after the government decided to suspend the issuance of licences to fire‑service personnel. The union says the move highlights chronic understaffing and places firefighters under unsustainable workloads, risking both their health and public safety.
In its statement titled “Enough with the Exhaustion of Personnel,” the union warned that firefighters are “not machines, not disposable,” and called on the state to adopt concrete measures to increase staffing levels, protect rest periods and ensure the safety of both firefighters and citizens.
The protest underscores growing concerns over fatigue, mental and physical strain, and the potential impact on emergency response capabilities across Greece.
