Greek fishermen present industry challenges to European Commission
Representatives from the Fishing Association of Magnesia and Sporades and the Coastal Fishing Shipowners Association participated in the 12th “Reality Check” interactive session held in Brussels from October 9-11. Organized by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the meeting aimed to provide officials with a direct understanding of the challenges facing professional fishers.
Key issues raised by the Greek delegation included damage caused by rising marine mammal populations and the impact of invasive species, specifically the rabbitfish. Discussions also addressed climate change effects, such as seasonal plankton eutrophication, and the increasing bureaucratic burden imposed by the Common Fisheries Policy.
Furthermore, the representatives highlighted difficulties regarding the digitalization of the industry, which poses challenges for older fishers, and a perceived lack of involvement in EU decision-making processes. Other concerns included misaligned priorities in subsidy programs, a lack of support for new entrants to the profession, and the ongoing cessation of fishing activities due to vessel withdrawals.
