Greek fishermen launch nationwide protests over fuel costs

Fishermen across Greece have initiated widespread protests and strikes, leaving fishing vessels moored and fish markets closed. The demonstrations are driven by dissatisfaction with government measures regarding fuel subsidies. While the Ministry of Rural Development and Food announced an increase in fishing fuel subsidies—rising to 32 cents per liter for April and May and 24 cents for the summer months—protesters argue these measures are insufficient.

Industry representatives are demanding a subsidy of at least 50 cents per liter to offset rising operational costs. In Thessaloniki, the strikes have led to significant shortages of fresh fish in local markets, with vendors increasingly relying on frozen or farmed alternatives. Some fishermen have threatened to escalate their actions by blocking major ports.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with representatives in Chalkidiki, pledging that the government would exhaust all possibilities to provide meaningful financial support. He stated, “I will personally deal with the issue,” promising more specific details in the coming days to help the sector remain competitive.
