Greek fishermen launch indefinite strike over rising costs

Professional fishermen in Greece have announced an indefinite work stoppage and the mooring of fishing vessels starting October 1. The Greek Fishermen's Initiative and various professional categories, including divers and coastal fishers, are participating in the mobilization to protest the unsustainable state of the industry.

Key drivers of the crisis include soaring maritime diesel costs, significant damage to fishing gear caused by dolphin overpopulation, and the impact of phytoplankton blooms on the marine ecosystem. The protesters are demanding state intervention, including fair compensation through vessel decommissioning programs and the closure of fish markets across the country to exert pressure.

The Panhellenic Federation of Traditional Market Sellers (POSPLA) has expressed full support for the strike, noting that protests will begin at the Keratsini Fish Market. Industry representatives warn that the rising operational costs will inevitably be passed down the supply chain, leading to higher prices for consumers and reduced access to affordable domestic seafood.
