Greek FM Gerapetritis calls for accelerated EU accession of Western Balkans

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis addressed the SEECP summit in Sofia, urging stronger regional cooperation and faster European Union integration for the Western Balkans. He highlighted the importance of connectivity, energy partnership, security and common defence, and reaffirmed Greece’s role in speeding accession processes that stem from the Thessaloniki Declaration and will be advanced during Greece’s EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2027.

The minister’s diplomatic tour continued with a scheduled visit to Belgrade, where he will meet Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić, President Aleksandar Vučić and Prime Minister Đuro Macut, followed by a joint press briefing. The visits underscore Greece’s effort to facilitate the Western Balkans’ EU path and to promote stability in a region facing heightened geopolitical tensions.
