Greek football VAR system under KED criticised for staffing failures

The head of Greece’s refereeing committee (KED), Paulo Vale, described the current VAR panel as a success despite it consisting of only three officials while seven matches are played each round. Critics note a stark imbalance between the 21 match‑referees and the three VARs, highlighting that the panel includes referees who failed the competitive tests and was expanded by adding a fourth member at Vale’s request.

Observers allege that the limited VAR staffing has led to missed interventions, including seven to eight unpenalised penalties, and suggest that selective decisions have favoured certain clubs. The situation is portrayed as a systemic issue that undermines the integrity of match results in the Super League and Super League 2.
