Greek Foreign Minister calls for child protection in armed conflicts
Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis addressed the United Nations Security Council in New York regarding the protection of children in armed conflicts. Marking 30 years since the landmark Graça Machel report, Gerapetritis emphasized that while progress has been made in monitoring and reintegrating children from armed groups, the scale of violations remains deeply concerning.
Gerapetritis highlighted the emergence of new threats, specifically noting that technology must not become a weapon against children. He warned against digital recruitment, coercion, and exploitation, stating that a child recruited via a digital platform is no less a victim than one recruited on a battlefield. He called for accountability and the implementation of effective safeguards during the development of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
During the session, the Minister referenced Resolution 2832 (2026), which was introduced by Greece and supported by nearly 100 member states. He urged the international community to move beyond commitments toward measurable action and real-world security, stressing that political disagreements should not undermine the collective responsibility to protect children.
