Greek Foreign Minister Gerapetris Reaffirms Support for Montenegro’s EU Accession

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetris reiterated Greece’s unwavering backing of Montenegro’s bid to join the European Union after a meeting in Podgorica with Montenegrin Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ervin Ibraimović. He thanked Prime Minister Milojko Spajić and highlighted the longstanding friendship between the two NATO allies.

Gerapetris said the accession process is mutually beneficial and stressed Greece’s role in assisting Montenegro’s reforms and alignment with EU foreign‑policy and security standards. He marked the 20th anniversary of Montenegro’s independence and noted the recent EU‑Western Balkans summit in which Greece was represented by the President and the Prime Minister. The minister also referred to Greece’s upcoming EU Council presidency in the second half of 2027, during which Athens aims to keep Western Balkan enlargement high on the EU agenda and hopes to welcome Montenegro as a member state.

The statements underline Greece’s strategic interest in stabilising the South‑East European region through EU expansion and signal continued technical and political support for Montenegro’s accession negotiations.
