Greece and Egypt to expand maritime EEZ agreement

Greece and Egypt have agreed to begin discussions to expand the geographic scope of their 2020 Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) delimitation agreement. This decision follows a telephone conversation between Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis and his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty.

The move serves as a diplomatic response to the recent ratification of the 2019 Turkey-Libya maritime memorandum by the Libyan House of Representatives. Both Greek and Egyptian officials categorically rejected the Libyan ratification, asserting that the memorandum is illegal and violates international law, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

In parallel, Greece has escalated its diplomatic efforts at the United Nations. Ambassador Aglaia Baltas has sent a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres challenging the legal validity of the Turkey-Libya memorandum and has briefed the UN Security Council on the potential risks such developments pose to the stability and security of the Eastern Mediterranean.
