Greek government accelerates infrastructure projects before next election
The Greek government has set a strategy to deliver a large number of infrastructure projects before the next national elections, shifting from broad promises to concrete ribbon‑cuttings. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Infrastructure Minister Christos Dimas highlighted the completion of the final kilometre of the E65 highway as a recent example.
Key works under the accelerated plan include the extension of the Thessaloniki metro to Kalamaria, with five new stations slated to open within weeks. Data from the National Centre for Research and Technology Development and the Institute of Transport show a traffic reduction of over 15% in the city centre during the first 18 months of the existing line, and the extension is expected to further reshape the urban transport map.
Another flagship project is an elevated fast‑lane (flyover) in Thessaloniki, now about 60% complete and scheduled for completion in the first half of 2027, which will double vehicle capacity from 5,000 to 10,000 per hour. The ministry’s broader portfolio also covers new highways, rail networks, schools, hospitals and airport facilities, all aimed at speeding up timelines ahead of the electoral cycle.
